Tax Accountant Interview Questions

When hiring a Tax Accountant, look for candidates who are highly analytical, pay close attention to detail, and are comfortable working under pressure. You’ll also want to hire the candidate you feel will best be able to help your clients (or organization) make better business decisions. Ask questions about the candidate's work experience as well as why they enjoy tax accounting. What is their motivation for working in this area of accounting? What would make them an excellent fit for the role in particular?

Here are some fantastic questions we suggest for hiring a Tax Accountant:

  • How do you stay up-to-date on tax laws and industry changes?
  • What do you enjoy the most about tax accounting? The least?
  • Are you aware of and comfortable with the additional expectations of ‘tax season’?
  • Tell me about a time you identified an opportunity for tax savings.
  • How much experience with tax provisions do you have?
  • Why do you like/want to work in tax accounting as opposed to other types of accounting?
  • Tell me about a tax strategy you created and communicated to an organization/client. What was the result?
  • How do you minimize the risk of errors in your work?
  • Do you have experience working with international tax laws?
  • Tell me about a mistake/error you made at work. What was it, the result, and what did you learn from this experience?
  • Are you able to simplify and explain complex tax information? (Here is an opportunity test the candidate. Give them an example and ask them to explain it. Please allow adequate time for them to interpret the data first.)
