Software Developer Interview Questions

Think about the daily interactions this person will have with the larger team. Will they be working remotely or joining an on-site team? How independent will they be expected to be, and is the expected level of responsibility? Make sure to add all these details in the job posting and ask relevant interview questions. Look for insights into the candidate’s opinion of their ideal role. Are they looking to work independently, or closely with a team? You’ll want to clarify their intent as well as get a sense of their experience. If you require someone to work closely with others, you should ask interview questions that assess interpersonal skills and teamwork.

Seek guidance from the development team when creating a list of skill and role-specific interview questions (and desired responses). These questions should help you understand the candidate’s competencies. We recommend group interviews for this and other roles you may not be as familiar with, as other developers will be better able to identify satisfactory answers.

Here’s some other fantastic interview questions we suggest for hiring a Software Developer:

  • Can you tell me about a project you really enjoyed?
  • In which of your past roles do you think you gained the most experience and career growth, and why?
  • Describe your ideal work environment.
  • What qualities does a great project manager need to have? What does a great relationship between a project manager and a development team look like?**
  • Can you tell me about a past role where you worked closely with a team? What was that like? What did you learn about yourself from this experience?
  • How do you like to approach your work?
  • What is good code?
  • Tell me about a project or task you found very frustrating. What was your role, and what was the final result?
  • What would you say is most important when reviewing someone else's code?
  • How would you describe a successful and efficient team? In your opinion, what components and traits are required?**
  • What is the one thing that you find most challenging in working with a team?

**Asking questions about the candidate's ideas of proper management and well-functioning teams can provide insights beyond any socially influenced responses they may give about their own work.
