Data Scientists are those who know how to extract meaning from and interpret data. This requires a combination of tools and methods from statistics and machine learning and (of course!) being human. Much of a data scientist’s time is spent collecting, cleaning, and transforming raw data into usable formats. When interviewing for a Data Scientist role, it’s important to explore practical experience and technical experience (inc. programming and statistical analysis).

• Which data scientists do you admire the most and why?
• What unique skills can you add to our data science team?
• What were the business outcomes/decisions for the projects you worked on in the past?
• How would you explain to senior management why a particular data set is important?
• How can you make sure that you don’t analyse something that ends up producing meaningless results?
• What are false positives?
• What are the methods for anomaly detection in time series data?
• How can you fill data gaps?
• What are feature vectors?
• Explain the steps in making a decision tree.
• What is root cause analysis?
